Which songs people listen and why ? .

By Tauseefuddin Khan

People are more inclined towards listening to those songs that are melodious, appeals to them and have good lyrics embedded into the music. Like a product marketer has to estimate and visualize what the people are looking for in a particular product so that the marketing campaign may be successful – similarly, the music director together with lyricist visualizes about the song and its final consequence when it hits the distribution.

Most often – if we talk about movies, songs are script based and this forces the musician as well as the lyricist to forgo something better for the sake of staying with the script. It’s difficult to define a hit song – but if most of the people tend to like a similar song and if it’s played more and more number of times that denotes that the song has made it into the minds of the people and will be there forever if the song is a massive hit, or for sometime if it’s a hit, or will be forgotten if it’s a flop song.

Not necessarily all songs of an album produce the hit sequence – in an album often it’s seen and realized that some songs are better and some are just average to below average. Also, it’s quite noted often times that a song has different preference or gets different treatment from different people.
it’s sometimes a case that a song which you like is not liked by your friend and vice-versa. But in my opinion a hit song has large preference of public. It’s to be noted that the music directors get their awards for best music for not a single best song but for composing uniquely the entire album.

In earlier years of cinema the trend was to give the best music award to a song which is a blockbuster hit rather than the entire album – like similarly a lyricist is granted a best award based on a single beautiful lyrics he churns out in an year irrespective of what other not so good lyrics he may have wrote. But the trend for the former has changed but the latter has remained still the same.

Formula for a successful song weather made for an album or made for a film is still the same that is catchy tune + catchy lyrics = a hit song. And vice – versa. The problem is that sometimes the entire crew involved in the song making thinks that it’s going to be a hit song but public gives it an entirely different treatment making it the flop song.
Here, the skill to determine public taste which is constantly changing comes into picture.

In my opinion now-days filmi music has became a part of film revenue – the producer may tend to minus all film making and music making expenses from the over-all revenue. Instead of departmentalizing the scenario – with increasing internet awareness music sales have touched the low side…only, selected artist music is still enjoying that monopoly of having its due realized. Leaving it – filmi music is just for the same period of 3 hour entertainment which the film itself has
If you go to watch a movie of three hours – you listen to the songs which are script based – most people forget the songs there itself making songs as film oriented and for story sake only. Only those songs are picked up by people to listen it often or for sometime if it’s really worth listening – otherwise like a forgotten picture songs are also forgotten. Today only few songs make it to the minds of the people and not many which is used to be the case with earlier period of cinema.
