In order to categorize Hindi lyrics into various moods and aspects it’s essential to know about the phases through which everybody’s life passes. We Human has many roles to play in our lives and to a large extent we can find those different roles in lyrics, songs and movies. There is large variety of lyrics suited to many situations and occasions of life. Poets and lyricist summed it well on each occasion of these life’s occasions/aspects/phases in their own style and wit.
A quick list of types of lyrics/songs will tell us about the following major types:
Shaadi/Vivaah/Marriage-Songs, Hindi-Birthday/Salgirah Songs, Saawan/Rainy Songs, Sagaai/Engagement Songs, Diwali Songs, Holi Songs, Raksha Bandhan Songs ,Eid songs, Dosti/Friend Hindi Songs, Maa/Mother Hindi Songs , Baba/Father Hindi Songs , Didi (Sister) Songs, Bhaiya (Brother) Songs, Devar (Brother-In-Law) Songs ,Hindi Children Songs ,Hindi Ruthna Manana Songs, Dandiya Songs ,Funny Hindi Songs ,Hingish Hindi Songs, Hindi Item Songs ,Patriotic Hindi Songs ,Devotional Hindi Songs ,Sad Hindi Songs ,Tragic Hindi Songs, Romantic Hindi Songs , Bhakti/Devotional songs, War songs, and many more.
But, interestingly most of the lyrics of bollywood or albums are based on romantic themes or has relation with love related aspects of ones life. there are many sub categories under love songs – it can be as simple as this: pehli nazar, iqraar hona, intezaar karna, roothna manana, judaai, tere bina songs, Milan songs, etc. then there is an element of betrayal or disloyalty in love relationship which is beautifully summed in ‘Bewaai/Bewafa’ type of songs – and then there are some category of songs also in which the person in love repents on his bewafai or ill treatment towards his/her love.
In any particular film you’ll find at least 2-3 categories prominent. As most of the scripts have ups and downs – and similarly the lyrics/songs will too comply with what the scripts says. Take for example – any films lyrics – you’ll find there would be a romantic song, a sad song, a silly song – etc, etc.
Most of the scripts of Bollywood revolve around simple love story type like themes and that’s the reason why songs related to this category form almost major chunk of lyrics/song writing – it can be as high as 85-90%. Most of the songs are based on this type of category.
Interestingly people still listen to them as and when a new album is get released. One of the reasons for this is the youth factor. Major revenue of industry comes from youth’s and their predominant interest is love stories which can take any form of representation – it can be a action cum love story, suspense cum love story, etc. Interestingly musicians and lyricist or song writers finds this category from writing perspective easy and imaginative.
It’s quite hard to create an unforgettable impact of lyrics on the listeners in such category because of its repetitive nature. And, that may also be a one reason among many in the failure of many music albums released every year and only quite few able to do well. .
